Abstract

Course syllabus for SOCW 450 Social Groupwork

Course description: This course introduces the student to the roles of the practitioner and the use of small group intervention skills as a strategy to improve the functioning levels of individuals within the group, and groups. Theory and laboratory methods will be utilized to enable the student to identify, describe and analyze such concepts as: the advantages of the group setting, aims and values; group preparation, composition and contract; leaders and leadership; group processes and group activities; training, consultation, recording and evaluation. Emphasis is placed upon the student to select practice issues and engage in a process of inquiry, making use of social groupwork and small group research.
