ENGL 1000 Writing Studies 1 Literacy Autobiography Contest

The ENGL 1000 Writing Studies 1 Literacy Autobiography contest began when Governors State University first started admitting freshman in 2014-2015. The submissions for the contest are literacy narratives written in response to assignments in GSU’s first-year writing course ENGL 1000, Writing Studies 1, typically taken during students’ first semester on campus.

The literacy narrative serves as a foundational assignment in the first-year writing curriculum and asks students to reflect on and analyze the role that writing and reading play in their lives. After the semester has ended, students are encouraged to continue revising their essays ahead of the contest submission deadline midway through the spring semester.

Of all the students who submit essays to the contest, four are selected to earn monetary awards and to be archived here.  First place:  $200; Second Place: $100; Third Place: $50; Honorable Mention: $25.

Awards are funded through the generosity of President Elaine Maimon and Dr. Mort Maimon.



2018 Literacy Autobiography Contest


Eligibility: Students Enrolled in ENGL 1000 Fall 2017


DEADLINE: 11:59 pm March 16 2018


INSTRUCTIONS In order to submit a proposal, please register for an OPUS account under "My Account", using the instructions set forth in the Author Registration tutorial (see left sidebar link). Follow the details provided under “Submit Manuscript”

Manuscripts should be formatted in MLA style.

Please include with your submission a cover page that includes:

  1. Your name
  2. Your English 1000 teacher’s name
  3. A short essay describing your writing and revision process (300 words or less)
  4. A statement indicating whether you are available to present your essay at Research Day, if it is selected.

Entries will be judged by a committee appointed by the President’s and Provost’s offices. Winners will have the opportunity to post their essays publicly in OPUS.
