Description of Program

Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in healthcare occurs when multiple clinicians from various professions provide integrated services while working with clients and their families to deliver high-quality care. Interprofessional collaborative care improves health outcomes and has been shown to increase quality care, improve care delivery, decrease healthcare errors, reduce hospitalization time and costs, enhance client accessibility, and improve client satisfaction and workforce well-being. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) utilize holistic and client-centered perspectives to collaborate effectively with clients and other clinicians. However, when other professional members of the interprofessional team do not understand the collaborative value of occupational therapy (OT), IPCP is less effective and results in reduced healthcare outcomes. Maximizing the effectiveness of interprofessional teamwork may require OTPs to articulate their professional reasoning and demonstrate their unique contribution to effective IPCP. This study will explore how OTPs contribute to IPCP objectives and how team members perceive this unique contribution.

Abstract

Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) occurs when multiple healthcare professionals from various professional backgrounds work with clients, families, and communities to provide high-quality care. Occupational therapy (OT) therapeutically uses everyday occupations with persons, groups, or populations to enhance or enable participation. IPCP in healthcare involves collaboration with OTPs, PTs, SLPs, nurses, doctors, case managers, and others to ensure efficient, high-quality care to optimal outcomes. Evidence consistently supports IPCP’s role in improving patient outcomes and experiences and enhancing the quality of care. Participants report high proficiency (87.93%) in IPCP, indicating strong preparedness from collaboration across various healthcare settings. 100% of participants recognized OT as a vital member within an IPCP team, validating OT’s contribution to interdisciplinary healthcare teams 92.98% of participants noted better provider experiences through IPCP, which can lower turnover rates and improve patient outcomes. 94.7% of participants agreed that IPCP contributes to equitable healthcare by reducing gaps in individual care. 92.98% of participants believe that IPCP improves provider experience. Interprofessional education (IPE) promotes skill-sharing, shared values, and mutual respect among multi-disciplinary professionals.
