Brief History

Governors State University did not publish a catalog until 1976, but a bulletin was published in 1971, 1973, and 1974. The GSU Bulletin was an abbreviated catalog which included statements on university goals, admission requirements, degree requirements, and basic descriptions of academic programs. Course descriptions were not included.

The first GSU catalog which came out in 1976 included information typical of most university catalogs. However, since the academic programs in the colleges were competency-based, the competencies that students were expected to demonstrate were listed for the degree, the instructional program, and the areas of emphasis. This resulted in lengthy lists that students, employers, and other universities found difficult to understand. In 1978 the catalog was modified to state more clearly and succinctly the degree requirements and competency statements. Governors State University engaged in academic reorganization during 1979-1980. Due to the extensive academic changes in colleges, schools, and programs, the University did not publish a catalog in 1979. Source: History of GSU 1969-1979 by Ted Andrews.
