Abstract

Course syllabus for ART 518 Women Artists: Europe and the Americas

Course description: This course is a historical survey of women artists from the United States, Mexico and Europe. An examination will be made of the lives and works of eminent female artists and the intellectual, artistic, social and political climate in which they worked. Students will be expected to analyze women artists from the United States, Mexico, Europe and their works cross-culturally and assess the role of race, ethnicity, class and gender in the creation and viewing of art. There will be a comparative analysis of male and female artists of the same period and culture, and students will be introduced to the numerous museums, galleries and collections in the Chicago area.
