Description of Program

Through the act of creative writing, we often reflect on our own lives, addressing the universal experiences of coming of age and family. Family understands and shapes us. Growing up prompts us to broaden our perspectives and try new experiences. These two themes are seldom separate and often intersect each other. Furthermore, both are essential aspects of life and shape how one perceives the world.

In this panel, students from Laura White’s Intro to Creative Writing course will present fiction and poetry they have written this semester. Throughout Professor White’s course, students both learned and practiced a variety of creative writing techniques. The panel consists of four students, both graduate and undergraduate, presenting works of poetry and short fiction as well as providing insight into their work. These pieces address a variety of issues related to family and growing up and their complexities. Audience members will experience a diverse set of perspectives-- from first train rides to family photos.
