Abstract

This study offers insight on the incredibly dynamic and innovative field of speech-language pathology, its tendency to evolve as humanity evolves, and how to continue practicing ethically when serving newly emerging, marginalized groups. Being aware of the evolutionary potential that is inevitably interconnected with understanding and treating human needs is a crucial realization for anyone interested in or currently serving in the field of Health and Human Services. It is essential, as a speech-language pathologist, to devote oneself to lifelong learning and cultural humility when providing voice and communication services as gender-affirming care. Research in this area will allow for speech-language pathologists to expand their knowledge base, and effectively and ethically provide services to those who seek voice and communication services as gender-affirming services. This research will be conducted through textual analysis. The focal point of this research will be on gender-affirming voice and communication services as a rising treatment area for speech-language pathology: highlighting the most prominent patterns emphasized throughout the literature. Results from this study will help raise awareness about voice and communication services as a form of gender-affirming care, allowing more individuals to have the opportunity to seek out this kind of treatment if they wish to do so. For some, these services may have a significantly positive impact on their quality of life.
