Abstract

This literature examines the association between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in the workplace, more specifically how extrinsic motivators alter employees’ perception of job satisfaction. Autonomy, competence, and a sense of connection to work are necessary components for intrinsic motivation (Aljumah, 2023). Intrinsic motivation is often not utilized by employers due to established leadership styles. Ineffective leadership styles can cause a lack of intrinsic motivation and lead to a lack of engagement from employees (Zhang & Liu, 2021). To increase motivation, employers often engage in extrinsic rewards. Imposed extrinsic motivators can lead to decreased feelings of autonomy for employees. By investigating why extrinsic motivation causes a decrease in intrinsic motivation, employers can better understand the need for fulfilment in work and increase employee engagement.
