Abstract

Course syllabus for ADDS 525 Clinical Approaches: The Stages of Change

Course description: The Stages of Change is an integral component of the Transtheoretical Model of Change designed by Authors Prochaska and DeClemente. This workshop will focus on the various stages clients enter and exit as they seek to overcome compulsive (addictive) behavioral patterns. Although the focus will be alcohol, the model is designed to address most destructive compulsive behavior. A major controversy in the alcoholism field surrounds the issues of resistance and relapse and why so many individuals who clearly have a problem are unwilling to change and even those who successfully complete treatment frequently return to drinking. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have a clearer understanding of the change process, the role of relapse, and a more realistic approach to defining recovery.
