Abstract
Course syllabus for ART 520 Art in Context: The Nude
Course description: Art objects from the European tradition are selected for study with a view to artistic theories and an analysis of symbolic content.
Survey of the unclothed human figure in Western Art from prehistory to the Twentieth Century. Will treat conventions of pose, gesture, and attitude within classical idealism and subsequent periods of realism as well as aspects of ephebism and self-image within artistic conventions, stylistic modes, and social context.
