Abstract

Course syllabus for CJUS 310 Criminal Justice Organization & Process

Course description: This course is designed primarily to help the student understand the criminal justice system - the process by which society identifies, accuses, tries, convicts and punishes offenders against the norms of the society as expressed in the laws of the United States. We will explore trends in crime, types of crime, legal processes, policing, courts, corrections, juvenile problems and a host of other related topics. Various issues will be discussed and debated by the class such as protection of society vs. individual constitutional rights; police discretion vs. discrimination, etc. In addition, we will examine the Criminal Justice Systems of some other countries and some projections for the future of the Criminal Justice System in the United States.
