Abstract
Course syllabus for HLAD 801 Health Care Sociology
Course description: This course is designed to provide an introductory exploration of the diverse field of Medical Sociology. Although this course is designed as an introduction and overview of the field, special attention will be paid to a number of subtopics in the discipline. We will cover the fundamental concepts, principles, and theories, as well as some of the recent research in Medical Sociology. Topics that will be discussed include: the social definition of health and illness, the American health care system, access to health care, utilization of health services, epidemiology and demography of illness, the patient-practitioner relationship, the health professional, and the organization of health care delivery.
