Abstract
There are many tangled threads that weave into student learning in higher education. Some of these threads include full-time faculty and adjunct faculty. In recent years, the amount of adjunct faculty members has increased for most universities. Governors State University is no exception. With the growing number of adjunct faculty, it may be necessary to examine how the adjuncts are fitting into the university. An investigation on how adjunct faculty fit into the fabric of the university could be the key to enhancing student success. Nationally, adjunct faculty are often working at multiple higher education institutions serving students across the country with limited job security, lack of benefits, and a paucity of professional development funds. The purpose of this study is to detail the demographics and utilization of adjunct faculty members at Governors State University. Utilizing an institutional dataset, the researchers will explore the number of adjunct faculty, the courses they teach, and how they contribute to the mission of the institution. Implications for both scholarship and practice will be discussed.
