Description of Program
This presentation is a detailed list of the good and bad effects spirituality and materialism can have on our mentality by looking at spirituality from an individual's standpoint and materialism from a person's, consumer's, worker's, and societal view.
Abstract
How does spirituality (a desire to develop the human soul rather than obtain physical objects) and materialism (a tendency to prioritize one’s possessions over spiritual values) positively and negatively affect your mental well-being? My presentation is a detailed list of the desirable and undesirable effects both mindsets can have on our mentality. The purpose of my presentation is to identify why people would turn to material or spiritual devotion for comfort. No matter if you shop religiously or a believer of the soul, knowing why someone supports a set of values helps avoid ‘your ideal vs. mine’ in interpersonal conflicts and offers confidence in your own belief. If you don’t agree with the values of spirituality, then reassert why you are a materialist, and vice versa. Using facts from mental health websites and blogs, along with results from past research on both mindsets, I will explain the good and bad effects of spirituality for the individual. I will also do the same for materialism on an individual, commercial, organizational, and societal level, and why both mindsets have their own utility.
