Description of Program

This presentation explores how experiential learning at Governors State University helps students grow into confident leaders, informed citizens, and engaged members of their communities. Through participation in Model Illinois Government (MIG) and the American Model United Nations (AMUN), students move beyond textbooks and into real-world simulations that challenge them to think critically, collaborate across differences, and lead with purpose. These experiences reflect the spirit of Jaguar Pride, service, leadership, and academic excellence in action.

Abstract

This presentation explores how experiential learning at Governors State University helps students grow into confident leaders, informed citizens, and engaged members of their communities. Through participation in Model Illinois Government (MIG) and the American Model United Nations (AMUN), students move beyond textbooks and into real-world simulations that challenge them to think critically, collaborate across differences, and lead with purpose. These experiences reflect the spirit of Jaguar Pride, service, leadership, and academic excellence in action. Model Illinois Government provides hands-on experience with Illinois governance and legislative procedure. Students take on roles as legislators and constitutional officers, drafting bills, debating policy, and navigating the realities of political decision-making. GSU participants have demonstrated outstanding leadership, including two students elected Presidents of the Senate — Lanetta Thomas and Imani Jackson, and a Comptroller Marquis Parks, showcasing the university’s growing impact in state-level simulations. At the global level, AMUN strengthens diplomacy and cross-cultural understanding. During our second AMUN simulation in 2025, the GSU delegation earned a Position Paper Award in recognition of excellence in research and policy analysis. In addition, three former GSU participants have been selected to serve on the AMUN Secretariat, helping guide future simulations and mentoring the next generation of delegates. Drawing on reflective analysis and participant observation, this project shows how MIG and AMUN build confidence, strengthen communication and negotiation skills, and inspire civic engagement. For many students, these experiences connect classroom learning to public service and community leadership. Together, these programs embody Jaguar Pride by preparing students to lead with integrity, serve their communities, and engage thoughtfully in a complex world.
