Description of Program

This interactive workshop equips graduate students with evidence-based strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome and building authentic professional identity. Participants learn to recognize cognitive distortions, document their expertise through success portfolios, and craft personalized professional identity statements. Attendees leave with practical tools for transforming self-doubt into confident, competent professional self-presentation.

Abstract

Goal of the session: This workshop transforms how graduate students experience imposter syndrome by providing evidence-based strategies for building authentic confidence and professional identity. Rather than simply normalizing imposter feelings, participants learn to recognize cognitive distortions, document their expertise development, and construct professional identities rooted in genuine competence. By session's end, participants will have concrete tools for challenging self-doubt in real-time and a foundational professional identity statement reflecting their unique strengths and values. Topics covered: Three core areas are addressed: the psychological mechanisms of imposter syndrome, including the imposter cycle and cognitive distortions such as all-or-nothing thinking; evidence-based confidence building through success portfolios that document achievements and growth trajectories; and professional identity development, helping students articulate core values and emerging expertise. Throughout, special attention is given to systemic factors affecting underrepresented students.

Format: This interactive workshop combines brief presentations with peer engagement, including polling to normalize imposter experiences, guided cognitive restructuring exercises, group discussions, and individual reflection activities for creating success portfolios and professional identity statements.

Audience takeaways: Participants will leave with practical skills for recognizing and challenging imposter syndrome in real-time, clarity about their current expertise, and a personalized professional identity statement articulating their unique values and strengths; transforming imposter experiences into opportunities for meaningful professional growth.
