Description of Program

The Center for Student Engagement and Leadership hosts annual spring break service trips, which are week-long immersive service experiences. Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips focus on various social issues such as racial justice, environmental justice, housing, healthcare, poverty, and more. The Alternative Spring Break trip in partnership with Network Volunteers will take place in San Diego, CA, beginning on Monday, March 16, 2026, and ending on Friday, March 20, 2026. The goal is to visit a location that will facilitate the opportunity for students to complete at least 20 hours of community service and an immersive cultural opportunity during the week of GovState’s spring break. Students will accomplish this by collaborating with local agencies in areas that include but are not limited to disaster relief, construction, education/literacy, economic development/recovery, sustainability, and civic engagement. This service-learning experience supported the personal and professional development of students. Guided by the 8 Components of a Quality Alternative Break Program, students developed vital soft skills associated with teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, and flexibility. At the end of the experience, students will be able to reflect on the impact the service has had on the community and the impact the community has had on the student. At the conclusion of the experience, students will participate in a reflective panel discussion to explore the impact of their service on the community and the ways in which the experience has influenced their own personal growth and learning.
