Abstract
Course syllabus for COMS 536 Business and Professional Speaking
Course description: This course addresses the most essential skills in business and professional communication. Through readings, lectures, class discussions and various types of presentations, students will study the following: thinking critically, embracing cultural diversity, promoting ethical communication, listening, managerial and leadership communication, managing conflict, team and group communication, and delivering public presentations. The following four basic skills of good communicators will be learned and practiced: 1) Set realistic goals and accomplish them, 2) Understand the communication situation and the audience, 3) Demonstrate competence, and 4) Manage anxiety effectively. This is a highly interactive class. Students will prepare a professional resume, practice interviewing techniques, experience being part of a group which must design and produce a product, lead a meeting, and deliver at least 2 oral presentations.
